Task options:
start an outline for the engineering notebook or portfolio
build parts of other robots in the Tetrix build guides (linked below)
prototype some mechanism ideas. Prototypes are meant to show whether an idea will work or not or what needs to be changed for it to work, so don't worry too much about how well a prototype is built.
Shop safety:
You will notice that we are working in a wood shop and that there are many big tools around the room. Do not touch the machines; you do not know what is dangerous to touch and what is not.
Horseplay and running in this room are not allowed. This can be dangerous to yourself or others that are using the machines. You do not want to bump into someone that is cutting something on a saw as they can severely injure themselves very easily.
Activity breaks can be taken outside or in the hallway (supervised and with adult permission) if needed.
For learning Tetrix build system:
First everyone should work on:
Put a few channels and brackets together in various ways
Mount a DC motor
Mount a servo
Make a live axle
Groups or individuals should then do at least one of these:
Mount a set of gears
Mount a set of sprockets and put chain on it
Mount something on a standoff
Use the tubes and tube mounts in something
Use an angle beam as a support beam

Both of these have instructions for 3 different bots each that can be looked at to see how various pieces are used.
